Our Public Benefit Purpose — UnseenFront

UnseenFront · Public Benefit Purpose

Bound by charter to something larger than profit

UnseenFront is organized as a Maryland Benefit LLC. A legal election that binds our members and managers to consider the public benefit in every decision we make — and to report on how we perform.

Section 01

Why we chose this structure

Most companies are legally obligated to pursue profit above all else. That is not the right structure for the work UnseenFront does. Moral intelligence — honest, primary-sourced, methodologically rigorous — cannot be built by an organization whose only fiduciary duty is to a quarterly number.

We chose the Benefit LLC form because we wanted the mission to have legal standing inside our own governance. Not aspiration. Not a mission statement pinned to a wall. A binding obligation, written into our charter, that our managers must consider the public benefit alongside member returns — and that we must publicly report on.

“The mission is not a value-add. It is a legal obligation, and the members and managers of this company are bound by it.”

Section 02

What we are bound to

Our articles of amendment designate three specific public benefit purposes. They are the standard against which our annual benefit report must measure.

Purpose One

Primary-sourced moral intelligence

We research, develop, publish, and maintain a rigorous, primary-sourced analytical framework for understanding global moral disorder — including the Moral Disorder Index and its seven dimensions — so that citizens, faith leaders, educators, veterans, policy organizations, and civic institutions receive structured, methodologically transparent intelligence, free from partisan advocacy, fabricated data, or conclusion-driven analysis.

Purpose Two

Analytical integrity in public discourse

We model and advance a standard of public analysis grounded in named, verifiable primary sources; documented and versioned methodology; explicit acknowledgment of uncertainty and record limitations; and the refusal to bend findings to predetermined conclusions — contributing to the restoration of epistemic honesty in public discourse on moral and geopolitical affairs.

Purpose Three

Institutional capacity for moral clarity

We equip churches, educational institutions, policy organizations, and civic leaders with the analytical tools and primary-sourced intelligence necessary to interpret global events — rather than merely consume coverage of them — and to act with moral clarity in their communities, institutions, and areas of responsibility.

Section 03

Who we are bound to consider

In an ordinary company, a manager weighing a decision is legally required to consider the interests of the owners. In a Benefit LLC, that duty is expanded. Our charter requires our members and managers to consider the effects of every action — and every inaction — on six constituencies:

  • Our members. The owners of the company.
  • Our employees and personnel. Everyone who builds the work.
  • Our customers, subscribers, and institutional users. The people and organizations that rely on our analysis.
  • The community and society we serve. Including the integrity of public moral discourse and the primary-source standard underlying our published work.
  • The environment in which we operate — local, national, and global. For a company whose work is the measurement of moral structure, this is the moral, cultural, and informational environment in which citizens and institutions form judgments. We are bound to consider whether our work strengthens or degrades it.
  • The long-term interests of the company itself — including preservation of our editorial independence and analytical integrity as our foundation.

The order matters less than the fact of the list. A manager cannot lawfully optimize for one at the expense of the others.

Section 04

How we measure ourselves

Maryland law requires every Benefit LLC to deliver, within 120 days of the end of each fiscal year, a benefit report assessing its performance against the public benefit purposes it has designated. Ours will be published.

The work UnseenFront does is itself the measurement of moral structure, and the same discipline we apply to nations we apply to ourselves. Our annual benefit report will measure the company on its own published framework:

  • Primary-source discipline. Percentage of published claims traceable to named, dated primary sources. Target: 100%.
  • Methodological transparency. Every scoring rule, weighting decision, and dataset change published to the Open Science Framework with a permanent identifier and version history.
  • Findings either way. Number of commissioned engagements in which our findings ran contrary to the client’s preferred outcome. Reported openly.
  • Sealed ratings. Every institutional rating cryptographically hashed and registered before outcomes are observable.
  • Reach into served constituencies. Distribution of primary-sourced intelligence to citizens, faith leaders, educators, veterans, policy organizations, and civic institutions who otherwise rely on institutional media or partisan commentary.
  • Editorial independence. Explicit accounting of any funding, partnership, or engagement that could compromise our independence — and how the conflict was handled.

The report will be honest.

Section 05

What this means for the people we serve

For a reader of The Dispatch: our analysis is legally required to serve the integrity of public discourse, not the traffic model. We are not permitted to trade rigor for reach.

For an institution commissioning work: our findings run either way. A finding that clears an entity is as much a fulfillment of our purpose as one that does not.

For a subscriber, a faith leader, a policy organization, a veteran: you are named, by name, in our operating agreement as one of the constituencies we exist to serve.

“You are not a market segment. You are a stakeholder our managers are legally bound to consider.”
